ATLANTA -- Braves manager Bobby Cox pulled Yunel Escobar from Atlanta's 9-4 loss to Philadelphia after the shortstop failed to run out a grounder in the first inning on Friday night.
It marked the second time this season that Cox benched Escobar during a game.
"A lapse," Cox said. "I didn't want to put anybody in just off the bench on the third out (who was) not loose (or) having a chance to run in the tunnel or anything. I never do that unless you have to. He just has lapses where I think he forgets."
Escobar, who was replaced by Omar Infante to start the top of the third, was not available for comment in the clubhouse after the game.
In an 11-2 loss at Baltimore on June 15, Escobar's two fielding miscues ended his night early by failing to turn a double play in the first inning and botching a rundown in the second.
Escobar was batting cleanup Friday for the fifth time this season. He went 0 for 1. Infante went 0 for 3.
Cox's most pronounced benching of a player during a game was in 1998 when he pulled Andruw Jones from center field in the middle of an inning.
