ATLANTA -- Ryan Howard homered twice, Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run shot, and the Philadelphia Phillies overcame a shortened start by rookie J.A. Happ to end Atlanta's seven-game winning streak with a 9-4 victory Friday night.
Philadelphia, which has won six straight, snapped the Braves' longest stretch of consecutive victories since July 2006, dropping Atlanta 8 1/2 games back in the National League East and hurting their fading wild-card chances.
Howard's 39th and 40th homers came off Tim Hudson (1-1), who gave up six hits, three runs and one walk with three strikeouts in seven innings.
Rollins' 19th homer and Ben Francisco's fifth homer, a solo shot, accounted for Philadelphia's four-run ninth against Vladimir Nunez.
Kyle Kendrick (2-1) won his second consecutive appearance with four scoreless innings.
Giants 8, Dodgers 4=
LOS ANGELES -- - Eugenio Velez and Pablo Sandoval homered, pinch-hitter Fred Lewis doubled home the go-ahead run and the Giants defeated the Dodgers.
The Giants' 80th victory - their most since winning 91 in 2004 - moved them 2 1/2 games behind Colorado in the NL wild card race. The Rockies lost 7-5 at Arizona and still trail the first-place Dodgers by five games in the NL West.
Bob Howry (2-6) pitched two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief.
Ramirez homered and drove in three runs as the Dodgers' three-game winning streak ended.
Ramon Troncoso (4-4) allowed two runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking none.
Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 5=
PHOENIX -- - Gerardo Parra doubled in the go-ahead runs, Brandon Allen and Ryan Roberts homered and the last-place Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Rockies, sending the NL wild card leaders to their fifth loss in six games.
With the score tied at 4 and two outs in the seventh, Parra hit a deep fly down the right field line. After a long run, Brad Hawpe gloved the ball but dropped it before running into the fence, allowing two runs to score.
Leo Rosales (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh. Randy Flores (0-1) faced one batter.
Juan Gutierrez gave up a run in the ninth but stranded the potential tying run at first for his sixth save in seven chances.
Marlins 4, Reds 3=
CINCINNATI -- - John Baker's RBI single highlighted Florida's four-run rally in the ninth inning on Friday night, and the Marlins snapped their nine-game losing streak in Cincinnati with a victory over a Reds team that had been previously perfect at holding such leads.
The Reds were 57-0 when leading after eight innings, the only NL team left with a perfect mark. Manager Dusty Baker decided to try to protect a 2-0 lead by having closer Francisco Cordero (2-6) pitch for the fifth day in a row. He soon regretted the choice.
Brendan Donnelly (3-0) got the win despite giving up Joey Votto's RBI single in the eighth. Leo Nunez gave up a solo homer by Juan Francisco in the ninth, but got his 23rd save in 29 chances.
Nationals 6, Mets 5=
NEW YORK -- - Ryan Zimmerman hit his 30th homer, Josh Bard drove in three runs and the Nationals held off the free-falling Mets.
New York rallied for three runs in a wild ninth inning and had runners at second and third when Jeff Francoeur hit a comebacker that knocked Mike MacDougal's glove off his hand. With his mitt on the ground in front of him, the reliever picked up the ball barehanded and lobbed a shaky throw to first for the final out.
Francoeur, who had three hits and a stolen base, tossed down his helmet in frustration.
New York (63-85) dropped 22 games below .500 for the first time since finishing 66-95 in 2003.
Pirates 5, Padres 1=
PITTSBURGH -- - Charlie Morton allowed one run in seven innings, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates win for only the third time in their past 20 games, over the Padres.
Morton (4-8) had lost six of his past seven decisions and had a 7.13 ERA since the beginning of August but shook off a rough first inning Friday to allow only six hits and a walk to win for only the second time since July 18.
Lastings Milledge went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Garrett Jones was on base three times for last-place Pittsburgh, which entered the game on a three-game losing streak and having lost eight of nine.
Brewers 3, Astros 2=
MILWAUKEE -- - Casey McGehee singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Brewers beat the Astros, sending Houston to its fifth straight loss.
With one out in the eighth, Astros manager Cecil Cooper brought in left-hander Wesley Wright (3-4) to face the left-handed batting Fielder. He ruined the move by doubling into the leftfield corner. LaTroy Hawkins took over to face McGehee who hit the first pitch to right and drove in Fielder for a 3-2 lead.
David Weathers (4-5) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 34th save in 37 chances.
Cardinals 3, Cubs 2=
ST. LOUIS -- - Matt Holliday homered off Aaron Heilman leading off the bottom of the ninth inning giving the Cardinals a victory over the Cubs, reducing their magic number for clinching the NL Central to six.
Holliday had been 6 for 29 in the first six games of a nine-game homestand, five of them losses. His drive off a 3-1 pitch from Heilman (3-4) landed in the Cardinals' bullpen beyond the right field wall for his third career game-winning homer and second this season.
The Cardinals are 9-5 against the second-place Cubs, clinching the season series for the first time since 2004.
Holliday has 13 homers and 49 RBIs in 50 games with the Cardinals. He had 11 homers, 54 RBIs and hit .286 in 93 games with Oakland.
