OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics have placed pitcher Vin Mazzaro on the 60-day disabled list due to shoulder tendinitis, ending the right-hander's season.
Mazzaro was 4-9 with a 5.32 ERA in 17 starts this season but was scratched from his last scheduled start on Sept. 3 due to lingering pain in his right shoulder. The A's announced Thursday night the 22-year-old would not pitch again this season but didn't make it official until before Friday night's game against Cleveland. The move is retroactive to Sept. 8.
Outfielder Matt Carson was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Mazzaro's place on Oakland's 40-man roster. Carson batted .264 with 25 home runs and 77 RBIs for the River Cats.
